What your dancer learns

More than steps.

Contemporary builds control, expression and creativity. Over a season, dancers build:

  • Floorwork

Moving safely into and out of the floor with rolls, slides and transitions.

  • Momentum and release

Using weight, breath and swing to move with flow instead of force.

  • Expression

Telling a story or showing a feeling through movement, not just steps.

  • Improvisation

Guided exercises that help dancers create their own movement.

By age

Contemporary that grows with them.

Classes are grouped by age and level, so every dancer learns with peers at a similar stage. Here is how class changes as dancers grow.

Ages 7–9

An introduction to floorwork, weight shifts and expressive movement through guided exercises.

Ages 10–12

Longer phrases, more technical floorwork and first choreography projects.

Teens

Complex choreography and performance work with real artistic intent.

Questions parents ask

Contemporary FAQ.

What age can my child start contemporary dance?

Contemporary classes at Danzone start at age 7, when dancers have the body awareness for floorwork and release technique.

What is contemporary dance?

Contemporary blends ballet technique with floorwork, momentum and expressive movement. Dancers learn to tell a story or show a feeling through how they move.

Does my child need ballet experience for contemporary?

It helps but isn't required. Beginner classes build the needed technique from the ground up, and many dancers take ballet alongside contemporary.

What should my dancer wear to contemporary?

Fitted dancewear so instructors can see alignment, with bare feet or foot undies. Hair should be tied back.

Six styles, one studio

Mix and match.

Most of our dancers train across two or three styles, which is how technique compounds.
